The United Kingdom (U.K.) embassy in Kenya has advised its citizens not to travel to a number of areas in the country’s north-eastern region in April.
This comes after the National Police Service (NPS) announced on Tuesday that it would increase security in various parts of the country next month due to increased activity during the period, such as Easter and Ramadhan celebrations.
Terrorism, including terrorist kidnappings, is at an all-time high during religious holidays, according to the British High Commission.
“The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advises against all but essential travel to areas within 60 kilometers of the Kenya-Somali border, Eastern Garissa County, Mandera County (excluding Mandera West sub-county), and Lamu County (excluding Lamu Island and Manda Island),” the United Kingdom government said in an advisory.
Travelers have also been advised to avoid areas of Tana River County north of the Tana River, as well as 15 kilometers of the coast from Tana River to the Galana River.
British nationals who find themselves in the aforementioned areas, according to the UK government, should be wary of Al-Shabaab-led terrorist attacks.
“The main terrorism threat comes from extremists linked to Al Shabaab, a militant group in Somalia opposed to the Somali government,” the United Kingdom added.
“Attackers could strike at any time, including during religious or other public holidays or celebrations.” In places frequented by foreigners, attacks could be indiscriminate. You should avoid regular patterns of movement and travel during the day.”
Terrorist kidnappings targeting Westerners, including British nationals, are on the rise in the aforementioned areas, according to the United Kingdom.
“British nationals are seen as legitimate targets, including those working in tourism, humanitarian aid, journalism, and business.” “If you’re kidnapped, the reason for your presence is unlikely to be to provide protection or secure your safe release,” the UK said.
