The recent removal of verified badges from legacy accounts on Twitter has caused chaos among users, including Kenyans on Twitter (KOT). One account that lost its verification badge is the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) account, which has 1.4 million followers. Despite this, a recent tweet by the account has caused confusion and controversy among KOT.
The tweet in question was posted at 12:23 am on a Saturday and read, “Arsenal inawezapea mtu heart attack,” which translates to “Arsenal can give someone a heart attack.” The tweet referred to Arsenal’s 3-3 Premier League game against Southampton on the previous day. While some users found the tweet amusing, others criticized the account for being unprofessional.
One KOT replied to the tweet, saying, “This is very unprofessional. Admin use your individual account for such nonsense. Stay professional.” The DCI account replied, “Football is a profession like any other please upgrade,” indicating that the tweet was not meant to be taken too seriously.
Another user suggested that the account had nothing better to post, while another thought that the account was a parody. The confusion surrounding the account’s tweet is likely due to the recent removal of verified badges from legacy accounts, which has caused users to question the authenticity of some accounts.
Several media organizations have also lost their verification badges, adding to the confusion. However, it’s worth noting that Twitter has developed an alternative to traditional brand verification in the form of a gold badge, which is led by Elon Musk’s Twitter team. This alternative costs $1,000 a month and provides users with an alternative means of verification.
