According to an article in Politico, Chinese leader Xi Jinping is determined to end China’s “century of humiliation,” a period when foreign colonial powers subjugated and exploited China during the declining Qing Dynasty.
The discourse of humiliation is used by the ruling Communist Party to draw a contrast with China’s current “revival,” and Beijing sees American attempts at containment as an effort to impose a new century of humiliation.
China’s determination to be an independent world power, in itself, raises the risk of war and conflict, and the unresolved legacy of Taiwan adds to the political stakes.
Therefore, it is wise to cooperate and coexist with a rising China, as attempting to suppress it may prove to be a huge error.
