On Thursday, Dani Alves, a former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star defender, requested bail from a Spanish court while he awaits trial for rape allegations.
Alves was detained in January after being accused of raping a young woman in a nightclub bathroom in Barcelona in December.
The court has held him in custody without bail, fearing he may attempt to flee. Alves’ lawyers argued that he “can and wants to defend himself and will not avoid the trial.”
Alves had previously appeared before a Barcelona court and admitted to having sexual relations with the woman, which he says was consensual.
