Kenya’s trade deficit with China has increased for the second consecutive year, despite aggressive efforts by Nairobi to open up Chinese markets under the Integrated National Exports Development and Promotion Strategy launched in 2018.
According to official trade data from the Central Bank of Kenya, the deficit rose to $3.62 billion in 2022 from $3.51 billion the previous year.
This is the highest level since 2017 when the deficit was $3.68 billion.
Despite signing an MoU with China to flatten trade barriers and allow access to the Chinese market for Kenyan produce, Kenya’s exports to China have slowed down.
