The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission canceled the gubernatorial elections for Kakamega and Mombasa Counties on August 9, 2022, due to a printing error.
Soon after, the Commission announced and gazetted new election dates for August 23rd, 2022, through its Chairperson, Wafula Chebukati. The IEBC came forward again and changed the dates after the commissioners were accused of being harassed and scared.
Today, on August 22nd, 2022, in an event broadcast live across all media outlets, the IEBC met with representatives and candidates from the affected areas and announced the new date for the elections, August 29th, 2022. The Commission set this date after meeting with the candidates, who were all in agreement with it.
The races for governor’s seats in Kakamega and Mombasa Counties, Pokot South Constituency, Kacheliba Constituency, and Rongai Constituency in Nakuru County were among those affected by the postponement.
Several County Assembly Representative elections were also impacted, including Kwa Njenga ward in Embakasi South Constituency and Nyaki West ward in Imenti North Constituency.
