Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka welcomed President Uhuru Kenyatta for a dinner party at his home on Friday, March 18.
Uhuru’s visit was reportedly in gratitude of Kalonzo’s decision to shelve his Presidential ambition and endorse ODM leader Raila Odinga, according to the meeting, which was also attended by Kenya African National Union (KANU) Chairman and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi.
It’s also thought that Uhuru’s five-hour meeting was aimed to clear the air and put a stop to any confusion inside the grand coalition following Kalonzo’s perplexing statements after signing a partnership with Azimio.
In an interview before to the meeting, the Wiper Party leader stated that his agreement with Raila was firm, and that he was willing to run as the ODM leader’s running mate in the August elections.
“Are you familiar with the concept of unconditional love?” That is what God has bestowed to us. Raila Odinga tosha mara ya tatu ya tatu ya tatu ya tatu ya tatu ya tatu ya tatu ya tat (Raila Odinga is enough for the third time).
“However, if my brother (Raila) decides to deputize me after consulting with other friends, I will gladly do so because we have a lot of unfinished business,” he remarked.
His statements come in the wake of demands from his allies, who claimed they would not accept anything less than a running mate role.
Despite a 2017 agreement between the two that Raila would assist Kalonzo’s presidential ambitions in 2022, Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo remarked that Kalonzo had taken the high road.
“We, the Wiper Party members, have pushed to make Kalonzo a Presidential contender since, throughout the 2017 campaigns, we agreed with Raila Odinga that Kalonzo would be a Presidential contender.”
“Because Kalonzo adores Kenya, he agreed that Raila should run for President. We want (Kalonzo) to be given the chance to deputize Raila Amolo Odinga while the negotiations are still underway,” Kilonzo said.
Dan Maanzo, the Makueni MP, echoed his sentiments.
“In the Azimio movement, we recognize Raila Odinga as President and Kalonzo as his Vice President. Let’s discuss the rest later “he explained.
Kalonzo had previously made statements implying that he did not fully comprehend the terms of the contract he signed with the Azimio organization.
