Tensions between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the army in Sudan have turned violent, with reports of heavy fighting around the Presidential Palace and Army Headquarters in the capital Khartoum.
The RSF has claimed control of the Presidential Palace and airports in Khartoum, Marwa and al-Abiad, and flights have been suspended in and out of Khartoum.
The RSF said they were responding to a surprise attack by the army on one of their bases. The US ambassador to Sudan has taken shelter amid the clashes.
Talks have been ongoing to integrate the RSF into the army as part of the move towards civilian rule.
