Tough Times Ahead for Job Seekers as Employers Weigh Alternatives

According to the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE), job-seekers are facing an extended period of unemployment due to tough economic conditions.

The FKE stated that businesses are experiencing low sales because of decreased consumer purchasing power caused by factors such as the recent drought, high energy costs, and global geopolitical conflicts like the war in Ukraine.

This statement followed official data indicating that the number of Kenyans without jobs rose from 2.89 million in the prior quarter to 2.97 million persons in the quarter that ended last December, with two-thirds of them having given up the search for work.

FKE Executive Director, Jacqueline Mugo, said that many firms, particularly the MSMEs, cannot afford the costs of operating in the formal employment sector, leading to an increase in the number of unemployed Kenyans.

According to the Quarterly Labor Force survey by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, the number of graduates and retrenched.
