Gathoni Wamuchomba, a member of parliament for Githunguri, has written to the National Assembly speaker, Moses Wetang’ula, seeking the assistance of legal experts to help draft a bill that would ensure equal representation and fairer distribution of resources across constituencies.
The proposed legislation would establish a baseline population quotient, which would form the basis for distributing funds through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund.
Wamuchomba, an ally of President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza alliance, argues that constituencies with similar or equal populations should receive similar funding, with more wards added if the population exceeds the baseline figure.
The bill echoes suggestions made in the Building Bridges Initiative backed by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, which sought to anchor the distribution of national resources based on population.
