Joy Mdivo, a vocal lawyer and political analyst, has defended the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati’s handling of the August 9th elections.
According to Mdivo, Chebukati attempted to follow the Supreme Court’s guidelines in previous presidential petitions, and while the presidential elections drew a variety of issues, the calmness over the results from the other 5 positions is proof that the poll agency delivered.
She went on to claim that the petition against President-Elect William Ruto’s victory was going to happen because the political class, particularly those from the Azimio victory, had pre-determined minds that they were going to win, which is why they petitioned against the presidential results.
“This time around, the IEBC not only walked Kenyans through the election process, but also informed us about the criticism and issues that arose during previous elections and how they were addressed. They have attempted to follow all of the rules and regulations that have been imposed on them, but the problem now lies with the politicians, who do not like what they see “She stated.
“We must distinguish between not liking Chebukati and whether or not he delivered. He delivered on the other five elections, and those who were elected, while some have yet to be sworn in, are already in office. Why is this specific one on the president? It has to do with our political culture, because it is not normal in a democracy for every election to end up in court.”
