The deadline for presidential candidates to announce their running mates is just days away, on May 16, 2022. However, the country’s two major coalitions, Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja, have yet to do so. We can only speculate that intense negotiations are taking place behind the scenes in order to form a winning team.
Both coalitions were expected to announce their presidential teams today, but nothing has happened as of yet. The two coalitions must also be under intense pressure to resolve this matter, which cannot be postponed indefinitely. Oscar Sudi attempted to reassure Kenya Kwanza supporters today after rumors about Ruto’s runningmate surfaced online.
The Kapseret Member of Parliament wrote on his Twitter page, “Our priority agenda in Kenya Kwanza is to revive our economy regardless of who becomes the runningmate. Relax, Watu.”
This statement can be interpreted in a variety of ways. Sudi may be implying that Kenya Kwanza supporters are putting pressure on the coalition to name Ruto’s running mate, or he may be attempting to calm them down before the announcement by reminding them to focus on the bigger picture, which is positive economic delivery by the next government. He is aware that there will almost certainly be repercussions from the announcement.
