In a recent development at the Shanzu Law Courts, two lawyers, George Kariuki and Elisha Komora, have decided to withdraw their legal services from the controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie and his co-accused. The lawyers cited frustration and interference from the state as the reasons behind their withdrawal.
During a media briefing on Wednesday, George Kariuki expressed their disappointment with the treatment of their clients by the state authorities. Despite their persistent efforts to ensure the fair treatment of their clients, their pleas were disregarded. Kariuki stated, “Since the beginning of the case, despite our calls for our clients to be treated well, our efforts have been in vain.”
Elisha Komora echoed these sentiments, blaming interference from the state for their decision to withdraw. He added, “We have tried begging them to make it easier for us to reach our clients while in police cells, but the state is giving mere reasons.”
On the other hand, a third lawyer, Wycliffe Makasembo, announced his commitment to continue representing the suspects in the case. Makasembo expressed his determination to stand with Paul Mackenzie and the rest of the accused, emphasizing that nothing would make him abandon them. However, he urged the state to facilitate a smoother continuation of the proceedings, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a fair and just legal process.
Makasembo also conveyed his trust in the judiciary system, expressing his belief that justice would ultimately prevail for the defendants. He urged the chief magistrate of the Shanzu Law Courts, Yusuf Shikanda, to resist any external pressures that may attempt to influence the course of the case. Makasembo’s unwavering support for his clients and his plea for an impartial handling of the proceedings reflect his commitment to upholding the principles of justice.
The withdrawal of two lawyers from the legal representation of Paul Mackenzie and his co-accused highlights the challenges faced in ensuring a fair legal process. It raises concerns about the treatment of the accused individuals and emphasizes the need for transparency and integrity in handling such cases. As the legal proceedings continue, the focus will be on the actions taken by the state and the judiciary to address the concerns raised by the lawyers and to ensure that justice is served for all parties involved.
