Ruto Considers Using ‘My Brother’ to Appease Raila to End Demos

President William Ruto has offered to address opposition leader Raila Odinga as “my brother” in a bid to end the ongoing demonstrations.

During an Iftar event held at the State House on Monday, Ruto stated that he would use the term “my brother” ten times and even add “my dear brother” if it would help stop the demos, chaos, and destruction of public property.

Ruto urged the opposition to call off the demonstrations, noting that it was time the country moved on from violence and destruction. He acknowledged that delivering on his promises would be impossible with the opposition demos ongoing and leading to property destruction.

Ruto urged the opposition to be patient and allow the Parliamentary negotiation committee to find solutions to the issues raised by Raila Odinga. However, Raila called off the weekly demos in early April but later changed his stance, claiming that Ruto had not honoured his end of the bargain.

Raila proposed a national-level conversation through a process similar to the 2008 National Accord, with a team drawn from its ranks both in Parliament and outside Bunge.

The opposition leader stated that he would unveil a second phase of nationwide mass action after the holy month of Ramadhan, which ends on April 20.
